My dear sweet Pushing Daisies, you left us far to soon. One might say the strike has caused you to be…pushing daisies! Oh that was clever. Bad puns aside, we’re left without new episodes of one of this season’s best new offerings. Even though it barely had time to hop off its training wheels, let’s take a look at this modern-day fairy tale. Continue…
Since his days on âStar Trek: Deep Space Nine,â Bryan Fuller has become one of the biggest icons of geekdom that you probably donât know that much about. The writer-producer created the television shows âDead Like Meâ and âWonderfalls,â and worked on the first season of âHeroes,â including the best episode of the series so far: âCompany Man.â Fullerâs creation, âPushing Daisiesâ is one of the only major hits of the â07 television season both critically and commercially. The story focuses on Ned, a pie maker who’s able to bring dead things back to life by touching them, including his childhood sweetheart –whom he can’t touch a second time without killing her, making for a decidedly awkward courtship. The ABC series has racked up three Golden Globe award nominations, a Peopleâs Choice Award nomination, and two Writerâs Guild nominations. Continue…
âIf Pushing Daisies deserves its Golden Globe nominations, it might just be because in the land of TV crime dramas, this ABC comedy stands out.
Fans might shudder to think of Bryan Fuller’s candy-coloured romantic fairy tale as a mere procedural, but that’s how the creator pitched his idea. But is it a fairy tale with a procedural bent or a procedural with a fairy-tale twist?
No matter. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which in past years discovered fresh cable fare such as The Shield, Nip/Tuck and Big Love before the Emmys noticed them, bestowed three important Golden Globe nominations for Pushing Daisies.
The series was the only new show that received a nomination, alongside its lead actors, Lee Pace and Anna Friel.
“We all knew it was something special when we got involved with the project, but we didn’t realize other people would recognize it so quickly and so surely,” Friel said. “I think it confirms our belief that it’s inventive and something very special on TV that people haven’t seen before.” Continue…
It’s every ’struggling-to-make-it-in-Hollywood’ British gal’s worst nightmare.
Anna Friel was just one of many British stars putting a brave face on it after the Golden Globes red carpet event was replaced by a simple press conference last night. Plans for a glitzy bash were abandoned after striking writers threatened to protest at the event, and actors warned they’d stay at home rather than cross the picket line.
None of which reached poor Anna until she’d picked out her dress! The former Brookside star was nominated for Best Actress in a TV Series for hit US show Pushing Daisies, but didn’t get to have her big night on the red carpet. She told the Metro newspaper:
âOn the day I found out they werenât going to happen,my stylist was in the car and I had all these dresses in the back of the car. It was like tortureâ.
Hmm, wonder I if she still tried them all on and danced around her house like I do?
Anyhoo, Cinderella has decided she will still go to the ball (just a slightly different one), as she isn’t going to let her chosen dress go to waste. Thrifty little Anna said: âIâm not going to tell you what dress it was because I am going to wear it to something else!â

Where else on television do you find a lonely pie maker like Ned (Pace) who can bring things back to life with his touch and who is in love with a dead woman named Chuck (Friel) whom he revived but can never touch again or she will die permanently?
Pace, who previously worked on âWonderfallsâ with âDaisiesâ creator Bryan Fuller, said the complications make the part that much more fun to play.
âAnd I am so appreciative of working with someone like Anna. She works so hard and is not one of those actresses who is happy to just look pretty in front of the camera.â
For her part, Friel says she would have hated being nominated by herself.
âWeâre both perfectionists and we work very hard,â said the British-born Friel. âWe concentrate very hard because the dialogue is so poetic and itâs so fast and rhythmic. If you let your concentration slip for 10 minutes, the scene is ruined.â
It’s Not ‘CSI: Couer d’Couers’ In the current TV era, truly original shows don’t appear all that often on the broadcast networks. If and when they do, they usually aren’t around for very long. “Pushing Daisies,” a quirky amalgamation of a fairytale and film noir, is the latest offbeat offering to bow on the Big Four. Comparatively speaking, it has done fairly well thus far. Continue…
FAVORITE COUPLE: Ned (Lee Pace) and Chuck (Anna Friel), the adorable, look-but-don’t-touch lovebirds on “Pushing Daisies.” RUNNER-UP: Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) on “The Office.”
BIGGEST SCENE-STEALER: Kristin Chenoweth, the chirppy little dynamo who made “Pushing Daisies” even more enjoyable.

It may seem like the biggest problem for Ned and his sweetie is the fact that they can’t touch, but like most couples, the truth is more complicated. Sure, there’s no touching, but lovers separated by distance find a way to struggle through that. No, just like anyone, Ned and Chuck have to work on communication and compromise. It’s cool to see their relationship getting more subtle as the season goes on, shedding the fairytale simplicity of the first few episodes. It’s also cool to see the always bizarre Paul Reubens as a very stinky guest star. Continue…
