Warner Home Video have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of Pushing Daisies Season 1 on 23rd June 2008 priced at £29.99. From creator Bryan Fuller (Dead Like Me), this romantic comedy shows us the fairy tale like world of gifted pie-maker Ned (Lee Pace), a man who can bring dead people back to life through the power of his touch. The same touch he must use to ‘kill’ them after no more than a minute or another person will die. With the help of Emerson (Chi McBride), a local PI, Ned uses his ability to solve murder cases and cash in on any rewards. But things get complicated when Ned’s childhood sweetie Chuck (Anna Friel) is the victim of a murder and Ned just can’t help but wake her up for good – the only hitch is they can never touch each other.
It was 14 days before cameras would start rolling on the pilot of “Pushing Daisies,” and creator Bryan Fuller had just met the perfect love interest for the show’s main character.Anna Friel wasn’t so sure.
“I remember having a conversation with my agent and I said, ‘I don’t think I can do this. I don’t think I can be all-American,’” says the British-born actress. “It’s not just about an accent, it’s a whole way of being — intonation, rhythms and all of that.”
The facts were these: “Daisies” was indeed a departure for Friel, who has a resume that’s short on comedy but includes such heavy roles as a murderess in the biopic “Bathory” and a heroin addict in “Niagara Motel.” On the other hand, ABC’s darkly whimsical fairy tale — about a mild-mannered guy who can revive the dead with his first touch and return them to the great beyond with a second — featured a lead female character who remains eternally optimistic, and Fuller wanted her for the part. After a U.S. prime-time television season notable for its lack of breakout hits, the supernatural fantasy “Pushing Daisies” emerged as the favorite new show of viewers in an AOL poll released on Tuesday.
The ABC series about a pie-maker possessing the power to bring the dead back to life with a single touch — and to dispatch them again with a second touch– ranked as the best new TV show among 24 percent of survey respondents.
The CW network’s hormone-fueled teen drama “Gossip Girl” was No. 2 with 20 percent of the 1.4 million votes cast online for the AOL Television poll. Continue…
When the nominations for the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards are announced July 17, there’s a good chance that actress Kristin Chenoweth’s name will be among those listed for supporting actress in a comedy series. As Olive Snook on “Pushing Daisies,” Ms. Chenoweth is part of a talented ensemble and a show that’s likely to garner a slew of Emmy nominations.
As Olive, a waitress at a diner specializing in pies called the Pie Hole, she is hopelessly devoted to her boss, Ned (Lee Pace). It’s an unrequited love, because Ned is enamored with Charlotte “Chuck” Charles (Anna Friel), the girl he’s loved since childhood.
Despite the heartache, Ms. Chenoweth’s Olive is tenaciously positive and determined to win his heart. “Olive never says die,” Ms. Chenoweth said of her character. Continue…
Michelle Ryan’s turn as the Bionic Woman has won her top place in a poll of the worst attempts at US accents.
The former EastEnder, 24, starred as Jaime Sommers in last year’s remake of the 1970s cult series before it was cancelled because of the US writers’ strike.
Eddie Izzard made second place for his role as Wayne Malloy in The Riches.
Anna Friel was next for her performance as Charlotte “Chuck” Charles, who comes back from the dead in Pushing Daisies.
Fourth place went to Hugh Laurie in his Golden Globe-winning role as Dr Gregory House in House.
Lancashire-born Ian McShane is next for his role as Al Swearengen in Deadwood.
The top 10 was completed by Essex-born Sean Maguire in The Class, Minnie Driver in The Riches, Joely Richardson in Nip/Tuck, Louise Lombard in CSI; Crime Scene Investigation, and Dominic West in crime drama The Wire.
Helen Hackworthy, the editor of RadioTimes.com, which carried out the poll, said: “Just as Dick Van Dyke struggled with his English accent in Mary Poppins, so too are some Brits failing to pull off convincing American accents.”
Just over 3,000 fans were polled on the Radio Times website.
The “missing” second episode of ITV1’s US drama import Pushing Daisies, which stars former Brookside actor Anna Friel, is to be shown on the broadcaster’s website on Saturday.
ITV has decided to live stream the “magic episode” on ITV.com after the show’s first series finale airs on ITV1 between 10pm and 11pm on Saturday, May 31.
The episode, which involves pie-maker Ned, played by Lee Pace, coming to terms with his ability to bring people back from the dead, was dropped by ITV1 to prevent the nine-part series from clashing with the Euro 2008 football tournament, which begins next Saturday, June 7.
“It’s a standalone episode and so many fans wanted to see it that the decision was taken to schedule it online on what promises to be one of ITV’s biggest nights,” said a spokesman for the show.
Other programmes in Saturday’s lineup include the final of runaway hit Britain’s Got Talent and An Audience With Neil Diamond.
The missing instalment is being billed by ITV as a “magic episode” of the series, which has been steadily losing viewers since it began transmission in April. Continue…
The former Brookside babe scored a huge hit in the US with her series Pushing Daisies, in which she plays the reanimated sweetheart of a man who brings the dead back to life.
However, while the show’s gone down a storm in America, prompting ITV1 to snap it up, the British broadcaster has seen their ratings slump from 5.7 million viewers to less than three million.
As a result, the axe is hanging over the series, and not even the lovely Ned could bring it back from the grave.
An ITV insider told The Sun: “It’d be a shame if ITV boss Peter Fincham axed it because, despite the ratings, it is quality telly.”
Too right it is - and maybe if the channel had thought about it properly, instead of chopping out episodes to accommodate football, it might do better.
Give it a chance Mr Fincham, go on, you know you want to.
